Nonprofits all over the world are working for the greater good, and perhaps surprisingly, there are even ones dedicated to reuse and recycling. InterConnection is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that specializes in greening electronics, whether you live near its hometown of Seattle or another location in the U.S.
The field of electronics is rapidly growing. For instance, Apple launched its first iPhone in 2007, and since that release, there have been at least four versions and even recent rumors about the iPhone 5 arriving in the near future. While it’s exciting that technology is constantly evolving for consumers’ convenience, the waste management concern rears its ugly head into the equation. Electronic components, including computers, televisions and cell phones, contain toxic materials such as lead, mercury, cadmium, lithium and other plastics and heavy metals. With more and more electronic equipment being produced and discarded in favor of newer models, there needs to be a green hero on the horizon. This is where InterConnection comes in. InterConnection offers a drop-off service in Seattle for computers, monitors and televisions every day of the week except Sunday. Primarily, the company attempts to refurbish the items so they can be reused, but if reuse isn’t a viable option, the next alternative is recycling.
