Background

Thirteen different waste haulers are contracted to collected recyclables at the curb in Sedgwick County, KS, home to the state’s largest city, Wichita (pop. 385,577). Wichita residents have their pick of service from any of these haulers, each of which are required to accept the below-listed standard recyclable items. Otherwise, pick-up schedules vary from hauler to hauler.

Materials recycled

Paper Corrugated cardboard, paperboard, newspapers, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, phonebooks and light-colored paper are all accepted. Plastics Plastic containers numbered 1 through 7, including but not limited to milk jugs, soda and water bottles, detergent bottles, butter and yogurt containers and more, are accepted. Metals Steel cans, aluminum cans and clean aluminum foil accepted. Glass Clear, amber, green and blue glass bottles accepted.

Frequency

Recycling pick-up is coordinated by each waste-hauling company in and around Wichita. Please consult with the hauler for an updated recycling collection schedule and service area map.

Other programs

Sedgwick County’s household hazardous waste facility, located at 801 Stillwell in Wichita, processed 1.6 million pounds of HHW in 2012. County residents can drop-off paint, aerosols, batteries, used oil, gasoline, antifreeze, pesticides, herbicides, garden chemicals, household cleaners, fluorescent bulbs, propane, and old, unwanted medication (no controlled substances) for free. Facility hours are Tuesday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition, Sedgwick County hosts a number of regularly scheduled recycling drop-off events for items like tires, electronic waste, used cooking oil and Christmas trees.
