According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, an estimated 14.3 million tons of textiles were generated in 2012, but the recovery rate for all textiles was only 15.7% that year. Still, nearly all clothes and shoes can be reused or repurposed in some way, so Planet Aid is helping individuals, schools, teams, clubs and other organizations recycle their clothing and shoes in honor of America Recycles Day.

Recycle Clothes for the Planet

Location: Planet Aid has clothes collection bins in 21 states serviced by 14 regional warehouses. Date: Now through Saturday, November 15 Event description: You can Recycle Clothes for the Planet in two ways: 1. Have your organization host a clothing drive with Planet Aid.

Planet Aid has worked with all sorts of organizations, from schools, churches and sports teams, to scout troops, residential communities and more. To sign up your organization, send an email to recycle4planet@planetaid.org with the following information:

• Your full name
• Your phone number
• Name of the organization to be signed up
• City and state where the organization is based

2. Take the Recycle Pledge.

You can also recycle clothes as an individual by taking Planet Aid’s pledge. After you take the pledge, go through your closet and drop off your clothes at a nearby Planet Aid bin (click here to find one). Be sure to snap a photo and show the organization how you’re recycling on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter by using the #recycle4planet hashtag.
