North American Industrial Classification (NAIC) codes are a system of numerical codes that categorize industrial facilities by the type of activity in which they are engaged. All companies conducting the same type of business, regardless of their size, have the same NAIC code. All plastic product manufacturers, for instance, would carry the same NAIC code. The codes were originally meant to help obtain statistical data on the economic status of the US. However, the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are now also using the codes for regulatory and survey purposes.
