Also known as phthalate esters, phthalates are used in making plastic products, improving their flexibility, transparency and durability. They are used in softening polyvinyl chloride (PVC ) which is another component of most modern plastic products. The National Institute of Environmental Health Services (NIEHS) has urged the phase out of many phtalate products in the U.S., as they pose serious health concerns.
