Working in printing at National Geographic, Hans Wegner became very interested in paper usage and the best practices related to the printing industry. This sense of environmental responsibility eventually led Wegner to his current role as Chief Sustainability Officer at the National Geographic Society. Since 2006, Wegner and his peers have worked to identify all the ways the society can lessen its carbon footprint. Of note, the energy used at the National Geographic campus in Washington, DC, has been offset entirely by wind energy.
