The capital of Tennessee and the heart of country music, the city of Nashville holds more than half-a-million people. This metropolitan area is just one of few green cities that is celebrating Earth Day and helping to keep Nashville beautiful.
Nashville will be hosting the Earth Day Festival at Centennial Park (2500 West End Ave.) on Saturday, April 19, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (rain or shine). This festival is completely free and family friendly, with live entertainment from The Farewell Drifters, The Honeycutters and Sam Bush. According to the event website, this year’s festival will help the community take another step toward Mayor Karl Dean’s goal of making Nashville the greenest city in the Southeast.
Expect feature exhibits and activities to educate Nashvillians about the importance of stewardship and protecting the environment. The festival will host educational activities for children of all ages during the early afternoon in the children activities area. Some of the activities include recycling games, wildlife on wheels, creek critters, camping experience, nature play, fun with recycling, skulls and skins and animal matching games.
The festival anticipates having nearly 100 booths, hosted by community groups, environmental organizations and government agencies that will offer exciting, hands-on activities for all ages. In addition to the festival, Nashville holds an annual “Green Market” that sells environmentally friendly items like locally made clothing, organic products, local foods, daily-use consumables, environmental publications and other green items. The Nashville Earth Day Festival boasts this “producer-only” market means that people standing at the booth were actively involved in making or growing the product that they sell. For a list of Green Market vendors involved, click here. New for this year, the festival will introduce a farmer’s market near the youth stage where residents can buy locally grown produce.
To make this event a success, Nashville Earth Day Festival is asking for volunteers to help with various tasks from 8 a.m. through 7 p.m. Tasks include general event setup, exhibitors, information/T-shirt sales, soda/water sales, green room/stage work, event takedown/cleanup and recycling/waste disposal. Any groups or individual volunteers are welcome to join and should sign up here.
